Volunteer
Opportunities
|
TSLI and HHB are fortunate to have the help and support
of our communities. You can help make a difference in the lives of others by
volunteering in any of the following ways:
|
|
|
Work with homeless children in the
Homework Help Program
|
|
|
Assist adults with GED,
English-as-a-second-language, or to write resumes
|
|
|
Donate your expertise and give a workshop
or lecture to homeless families or mentally ill adults
|
|
|
Do projects at one of
our residential sites
|
|
|
Conduct a donation
drive

Home
Work Help Program
HHB needs adults, 18 years
of age and older, to help homeless children do their homework
after school. The program operates Monday through Thursday from 3:30
pm to 5:00 pm, and is located in Huntington Station, NY.
To volunteer you will need
to complete a Volunteer Application
(pdf form *) and arrange for an interview. You will also need to be
fingerprinted through the Department of Social Services ( because
you will be working with children).
|
|
Homeless
Adults
HHB also needs volunteers to
help adults study for the GED, learn English as a Second Language, and
to write resumes, learn computers, etc. Schedules are flexible. To
volunteer you will need to complete a Volunteer
Application (pdf form *) and arrange for an interview.

Workshops/Lectures
TSLI and HHB often uses guest
speakers who donate their time to give workshops or lectures on various
topics that are of interest to our clients. Examples of topics
are:
|
- Job Search
- Birth Control
- Voter's Rights
- Tenant Rights
- Fire Safety
- HIV/AIDS
|
- Parenting Issues
- Personal Safety
- Personal Appearance/Beauty
- Stress Reduction
- Gang Awareness
- Health and Nutrition
|
|
Projects
Individuals or groups, can
volunteer to do a project at one of residential sites. In the past
volunteers have, among other things, painted, planted flowers, assembled
swing sets, and raked leaves.

|
Donation
Drives
Another great way to help is to
conduct a donation drive. Asking your co-workers, friends, family, or
club members to donate a few items is an easy way to contribute without
spending a lot of time. Items that are always needed ( and greatly
appreciated) can be found on our Wish Lists.
